Choosing a perfume for yourself is a very personal thing. What suits one woman will not suit another. Your choice of perfume should also complement your personality and lifestyle and your body chemistry will also play a great part in the type of perfume that will be good for you. The mood you try to create will also play an important part when selecting a perfume for yourself.

There are so many perfumes available in the market from the cheap to the exorbitant. So how will you go about choosing the perfume that’s just right for you? Sometimes, it takes a lot of trial and error to settle on the perfume that suits you best and it could be quite a daunting task. It’s best that you first sample a perfume by spraying on your wrist and wait for about 30 seconds to take a whiff of it and see whether you like it. You should never try more than 5 fragrances at a time since too many scents mingling will only confuse you.

The ingredients on the box will tell you the type of fragrance in the bottle. The most popular are the floral, citrus, musk, sporty, heady and warm fragrances. However all fragrances fall into three basic categories which are classic, sensual and delicate. You can always ask help from the sales girl at the counter to help you select a perfume that’s “You”.

It might not be easy the first time, but, if you really cannot decide and want something fast, I suggest that you settle for a classic perfume that has stood the test of time. You can’t go far wrong with something like Chanel No. 5 or a Dior which can be worn on any occasion. These types of perfumes never go out of fashion and will do well for a cocktail party, a dinner dance or even to go for a job interview or just loll around with friends in the patio. Classic fragrances such as Chanel No. 5 are timeless and I personally feel that every woman must have a classic scent on her dressing table.

Then there are the soft and delicate fragrances preferred by many women. These are mostly made of jasmine, gardenia, carnation and rose and a mix of spices and herbs. The better known perfumes in this category are by Nina Ricci – L’air du Temps and Premier Jour. Of course, there are hundreds more scents that come under this category and I mentioned only two that I like best.

If you belong to the third category of woman, bold and sensual, you will definitely go for something like Opium which has a wonderfully magical and sultry feel to it. Any woman wearing it is sure to be noticed and give her a sense of mystery and passion.

If you find a perfume you like but feel it is a bit too strong for you, try using less of it or dab a bit of it on your clothing, so that it will not be too overwhelming. You can also try the same fragrance in toilet water or cologne which is less concentrated, and will give out same fragrance, but with less power.

Selecting the right perfume for yourself could be great fun but it could take time for you to get exactly what you want. Nevertheless, it would be worth it in the end if you can make others turn around to look at you when you pass them by or even know that “You” have been there just by knowing your signature perfume.
